Our Magazine

One of the primary objectives of The Lantern is to design and publish an eponymous magazine each academic year. Our first issue of The Lantern magazine was published on May 11, 2023, with written submissions centering around STS topics from the Tufts University student body. We are excited to grow our community and work toward publishing future issues.

A NOTE FROM OUR CO-FOUNDER

As an STS think tank, we often encounter the question, "What is STS?" Simply put, Science, Technology, and Society is a rich interdisciplinary field that critically examines the social, historical, and cultural contexts of science and technology. However, this explanation only scratches the surface of the vast and fascinating curiosities that arise in this field. As we continue to study STS, we realize that the field is always in the process of defining itself, both broadly and locally, creating something unique and constantly evolving.

Over the past two years, The Lantern has also been in the process of defining ourselves. We worked through long periods of uncertainty and doubt in a small team, full of questions punctuated by the occasional exclamation mark. Through this process of defining and redefining, we have built a growing community and a foundation. We are proud to present our inaugural issue of the magazine, which showcases the fruits of the labor and passion of our members.

The articles in this issue reflect our efforts to distill the complexity of the natural and social world, exploring the scientific rules that bend, the technological artifacts that shape us back, and the emergence of community and art in the digital frontier. We explore how definitions can shape shift and break apart, inviting our readers to join us in the act of defining and redefining what we think we know. So, come and open the black box with us.

Sincerely,
 Nayun Eom
